The Third Annual Conference «Education and Global Cities: Horizons for Contemporary University»

 

On the 19th – 21  of May, 2016 the Third  International Conference “Education and Global Cities: Horizons for Contemporary University” will be held in Saint-Petersburg, Russia.

Conference will focus on the challenges and opportunities for a research university in the 21st century, the search for the efficient development strategy, considering the existence of multiple missions, which include not only traditional educational and research functions, but also a wide circle of the social tasks (“the third” mission) and the need to participate more actively in the territorial and urban development (“the fourth” mission), including the establishment of collaboration within the “knowledge triangle”, development of the innovative entrepreneurship, efficient cooperation with businesses and potential employers, taking into account the demands of the labor market and so on.

The conference participants will rethink factors and indicators of efficiency and success of the university in the new context, defined by the impact of world university rankings and the impetus to develop research fields that contribute to the standing of a university within these rankings. The participants will discuss the theoretical and practical aspects regarding the implementation of the new research model to analyze the interface between various actors in the field of research and innovation, including research centres, universities, businesses, governments and regarding new approaches for conducting research, industrial and innovation policy.

The participants will also discuss the emergence of new cross-disciplinary research fields, the search for balance between the fundamental and applied research, the new role of the socio-economic sciences and humanities.

The particular consideration will be given to the role of the universities in the urban and territorial development, the process of establishment of the key regional universities in Russia. Also, the collaboration experience between universities and regional authorities in Russian and abroad will be examined, as well as the results of international studies and the best practices of the HE strategic development on different levels (international, national, regional, institutional), considering the existence of multiple missions of a contemporary university and new challenges, that higher educational institutions face.

The EACES workshop “Human Capital in Cities: A Comparative Perspective” will take place during the conference.
