The International Student Research Conference “STATE, SOCIETY AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN MODERN ASIA” February 2 – 3, 2017

Students are invited to take part in the International Student Research Conference which will be hosted by the National Research University Higher School of Economics in St Petersburg (HSE St. Petersburg) on February 2 – 3, 2017, in the framework of the Annual International Student Research Forum – ‘Think Big Week’ (January 31 – February 5, 2017).

We are pleased to announce the session “STATE, SOCIETY AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN MODERN ASIA”. We welcome papers from all disciplines that study state-society relations and economic development in modern Asia, predominantly South Asia and the Middle East, through comparative and international political economy, economic development theory, and comparative anthropological sociology. This theme may be interpreted in variety of ways from problems of traditional historical periodization and the context of retrospective genesis methodology of Asian and African Studies to notions and explorations of the processes that are taking place in contemporary Asia and Africa. Papers may deal with relations between the Russian Federation and Asian countries. The theme invites a variety of lines of inquiry, a number of which are suggested below.

Urban Asia: economic, social and cultural development
Political process, economic development and cultural identity in East Asia.
National business in East Asia
Culture and Arts of East Asia: Society & Business
Religion and Development in Asia
Political process, economic development and cultural identity in the Middle East
State and Economy in CCASG Countries
National business in the Middle East
Religion and Development in The Middle East
Russia and Asian countries: Development and Cooperation
International Economical Integration and International Economical Organizations in Modern Asia
Asian countries in the International Investments System

Sessions will be arranged, based on participants having a short (less than 5 minutes) presentation (e.g. Pecha Kucha, roundtable, group discussion, demonstration) showcasing their research and introducing their poster. Precise instructions will be sent following the selection process.

The working language of the conference is English.

Registration

This form serves for the registration for all three parts of the Forum - "Think Big Week": the International Student Research Conference, Winter School, and cultural activities. You are welcome to select any event/ events for participation.

Submissions

Submissions should be abstracts summarizing the work to be presented (max. length of abstract: 700 words, excluding references) and should address the following:

Research Question / Objective, Conceptual or Theoretical Framework (up to 200 words);
Methodology / Research Instruments or Data Sources used (up to 300);
Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings (up to 200 words);
References (12 – 15 references).

Selection process

S ubmissions will go through a review process. They will be evaluated based on the logic and coherence of the abstract, the relevance and the potential to stimulate interesting discussions.

Based on the submitted abstracts, submissions may be accepted as posters and/or short presentations. The standard format will be a poster presentation.

Participants’ abstracts will be published in electronic form on the website of the conference prior to the start of the conference.

Themes and keynote speakers

Further information about the invited speakers and the theme-based sessions will be circulated in December 2016.

Fees and accommodation

Participation in the conference is free of charge.

Travel and accommodation costs are at the expense of the sending party. Registered presenting participants will be able to apply for free lodging at the University dormitory.
