Historians of the HSE SPb in Germany, France and Austria

Students of the undergraduate history program, trainee researchers and members of the scientific and educational group "Applied GIS in Humanities" Yana Kitaeva, Alexander Kuchinsky, Valentina Smirnova, Alexandra Egorenko, Oleg Kudinov and Sergey Mikhailov and senior lecturer of the History Department and a researcher at the Center for Historical Studies Ivan Sablin visited the University of Heidelberg.

Heidelberg University holds the first place in Germany in the international QS ranking. Students took part in several events organized by the Heidelberg colleagues and Ivan Sablin, a PhD graduate and an associate participant of advanced research Cluster "Asia and Europe in a Global Context" Heidelberg University.

The 21st of May, historians of the HSE of St. Petersburg campus and students of the Study of Eastern European History Center at Heidelberg University participated in a scientific seminar in English, called: "New Studies in East European, Russian and Eurasian History". It was chaired by Professor Tanya Penter and Ivan Sablin.

The 22nd of May, Ivan Sablin, Kitaeva Yana, Alexander Kuchinskiy, Oleg Kudinov and Sergey Mikhailov took part in a workshop "Geoinformatics Historical GIS: The Problem in Time and Space". It was dedicated the issue of historical research. Ivan Sablin made a presentation about the topic: "Historical Geographic Information Systems beyond Time and Space". The seminar was organized by the collaborators of the University of Heidelberg Kilian Schultes, Lucas Loos and Ivan Sablin. In the ensuing discussion, participants report for St. Petersburg and Heidelberg GIS Club presented current research projects and shared their experiences. The 23rd of May, participants went on a tour in the city of Wissembourg in France. Wissembourg city or Weissenburg is located in the territory of Alsace - the key to the Franco-German relations in the region. During the tour, participants visited architectural monuments dating from the Middle Ages and early modern times and discussed the cultural hybridity in the region and issues related to the construction of historical memory and national identity in modern and contemporary times.

The 24rd of May, Valentina Smirnova, Alexandra Egorenko and Ivan Sablin went to Vienna, where they became acquainted with the work of public and private cultural institutions, including visiting the palace complex of the Belvedere, the Albertina gallery, the Leopold Museum, Museum of Modern Art Vienna House of Art and the Museum Hundertwasser and Vienna State Opera.The tour participants got acquainted with the forms of museum spaces organization and working with collections, followed the example of visual and audiovisual sources stages of formation modernist and postmodernist trends in world culture, and discussed the relationship of art, history and politics. It is worth noting that the trip to Vienna allowed the participants to gather valuable information for individual research projects.

During the trip, which was prepared by the participants themselves, the students have shown great leadership and organizational skills, as well as a good level of English proficiency.
