Image of space of Northern Asia in the context of Russo-Japanese contacts in the end of XVIII – the beginning of XIX century

This Tuesday the member of the project: ‘Applied GIS in Humanities: Linguistics, History, Project Work’, Kuchinsky Alexander, presented his own research. The presentation was called: "Image of space of Northern Asia in the context of Russo-Japanese contacts in the end of XVIII – the beginning of XIX century".

In the given period, Russian Empire was actively exploring the Kuril Islands and Sakhalin island. As a response to this, Japanese government nevermind the policy of self-isolation started expansion to the North. That’s why this policy of isolation started to crumble. So this period is crucial in understanding and perception of this territory both for Russia and Japan. What is important is the native population – Ainu, because they were the aim of the expansion.
