Supervising Brilliant Minds of Economic Theory

by Prof. William Thomson (Elmer B. Milliman Professor, Department of Economics, University of Rochester, NY, USA)

Besides being a distinguished researcher in microeconomic theory, William Thomson has been often praised for his remarkable record of teaching and for sharing tremendous time and energy with his students, including more than 50 former and current doctoral students. Many of them have gone on to make major contributions in economics and to serve on the faculty of top institutions.
Many of his students received their first job offers from the top Economics departments (Larry Kranich (1988), Pennsylvania State University; Tomas Sjostrom (1991), Harvard University; Tayfun Sonmez (1995), University of Michigan; Toru Hokari (2000), Kyoto University, Japan; Atila Abdulkadiroglu (2000), Northwestern University; Christopher Chambers (2003), Caltech; Onur Kesten (2005), Carnegie-Mellon University).
At the lecture, Professor Thomson will share the experience of supervising bright minds and helping them to become outstanding independent researchers. The lecture provides a great opportunity to get familiar with success stories first hand. For a large and diverse audience, the lecture offers an invaluable guidance covering key elements of effective supervision, which are applicable to many other fields apart from the acad
emic practice.
