Course Syllabus

Abstract

The objectives of mastering the discipline "Introduction to Linguistics" — the idea of language as an object of study, linguistics and linguistic methods as a science, deepening the language; cover extensive languages, include and introduce the main languages of linguistic concepts. The discipline is leveling and provides basic knowledge in the subject area of students who do not have a linguistic education

  • To familiarize with the most important linguistic concepts

  • Possess basic terms and concepts of phonetics
  • Distinguish circumfix from infix, decausative from causative, etc.
  • Define the basic processes of speech production, the structure of the speech tract and its departments
  • Define the level phenomena of language
  • Distinguish the general problems of linguistics
  • Define the morphological typology of languages
  • Use the basic methods of linguistic research, terms and concepts of morphology
  • Define phoneme, archiphoneme, opposition
  • Answer the questions about the nature of language and its functions in detail
  • Give detailed arguments in favor of or against different linguistic theories
  • Navigate the main areas of modern linguistics, both theoretical and applied, in the tasks they set and the methods they use

Assessment Elements

Assessment Elements

  • non-blocking Presentation
    The student compiles an independent thesaurus for the course and provides definitions for all terms that have been included. The project should contain at least 75 terms. The project will be submitted electronically, and the presentation will take place in class.
  • non-blocking Essay
    A small (4000-6000 characters) essay on a given topic, demonstrating the assimilation of the points proposed in the lectures and seminars of the course. The student is offered two articles with contrasting opinions on one of the studied topics in linguistics. The student must join one of the opinions or present his/her own, applying argumentation using lecture and supplementary materials. The paper is written, off-campus, and submitted electronically to the instructor.

    Provide a complete description of one language of your choice in terms of all linguistic aspects studied. Answer the examiner's additional questions. Provide necessary comments and examples. You have 30 minutes to prepare
