"Enlightenment, History, and Society: German Perspectives"

In the course, we will discuss in three sessions texts by Mendelssohn, Kant, Adorno, and Habermas. In reading Mendelssohn and Kant, we will be particularly interested in how both authors understand enlightenment as a process encompassing society as a whole and effects and risks of this process regarding social well-being. We will then compare this somewhat idealistic 18th century perspective on the possibility of enlightening whole societies with insights from post-war Germany: Adorno's scepticism that 'working-through' (Aufarbeitung) of the Nazi past is really possible, Habermas's more measured analysis how to confront the complicated heritage of the GDR. 

The compact course consists of three sections:

14^th June - from 17.00 until 20:15.

15^th June - from 17.00 until 20:15.

16^th June - from 10.30 until 13:30

All sections will take place at Promyshlennaya street, 17. Room 412.

The course is tuitions free for all HSE-students and non-HSE-students, we also will be happy to see the specialist in the field.    

 All participants are required to fill the registration form .       

The course will have a mixed format: I will present the main theses of the texts in short blocks (10-15 min, English and/or German), followed by discussion units.
