A Night to Breathe: My First Student Night at HSE

A lively evening at HSE helped me reconnect, unwind and find balance in my new student life.

Before that evening, my routine was predictable. I moved between classes, readings, part-time work and long metro rides. It wasn’t a bad routine, but it left little space for anything beyond responsibilities. When I heard about the Student Night event at the main HSE building, I hesitated. I wasn’t used to going to university parties. Back home, I rarely attended such events and here in Moscow everything still felt new. But something in me wanted a small break from the constant rhythm, so I decided to go.

 The Event

The moment I entered the building, it felt different from the usual academic atmosphere. The hallways that were normally quiet and serious were filled with lights, music and voices echoing from every corner. Students were moving around with an energy that made the whole space feel alive. It was strange how the same building that held lectures and exams in the morning could turn into a lively place by evening. I met students from different programs some from international groups I had never interacted with before. Everyone seemed relaxed, more open, more themselves. Conversations started easily. People shared small stories about their classes, their home countries, their favorite places in Moscow. It was the first time I truly felt how diverse HSE is. At one point, I found myself standing near the music area. I don’t usually dance at public events, but the atmosphere made it feel natural. The crowd wasn’t judging; everyone was just having fun. I joined in and for a few minutes I forgot entirely about everything waiting for me the next day no assignments, no deadlines, no long readings. Just movement, laughter and small moments shared with strangers who didn’t feel like strangers anymore.

What Made It Special

What made that night memorable wasn’t only the event itself. It was the feeling of connection. I realized how easy it is to get lost in the academic pressure and forget that student life is also about living, not just studying. There was a moment when I stood near a group of classmates, watching everyone dance and talk and I felt something shift inside me. It reminded me that there is more to being a student than attending seminars and writing papers. There is community, friendship and the simple joy of being young in a new place. I learned something small but important that night: sometimes one evening of pure ease can reset your whole mood. It showed me that university life doesn’t have to be a straight line of responsibilities. It can also be a space where people grow socially, emotionally and personally.

Personal Reflection

When the event ended and I stepped outside, the night felt fresh. The city lights reflected on the pavement and my mind felt clearer. The tiredness I had been carrying for weeks didn’t disappear, but it softened. I walked home with a lighter heart, thinking about how simple moments can become defining memories. Looking back, Student Night wasn’t just a break from studying. It became a small turning point in my experience at HSE. It helped me understand that taking part in the social side of university life is not a distraction it’s part of belonging. It makes the long days easier, the pressure lighter and the whole journey more meaningful.
