Chasing the Sparkle: A Survival Guide for When the New Year's Mood Doesn’t Show Up

My personal tips to reignite your holiday spirit even if you're not feeling it.

Chasing the Sparkle: A Survival Guide for When the New Year's Mood Doesn’t Show Up

Let’s be honest: the New Year’s mood is a magical creature. It can descend upon you in November but as the calendar flips to December, it’s gone. If the festive spirit is playing hide-and-seek with you this year, you’re not alone. The good news? You can outsmart it. I’d like to share my personal tips for weaving that New Year’s fairytale feeling into everyday life, even when Moscow’s snowfall isn’t there yet. Here’re 12 steps.

1. New Year’s Playlist

The right music can easily build a festive atmosphere. This is your foundational mood-setting magic. You can go for the brand-new hits or stick to the timeless classics like “Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!” by Dean Martin.

But here’s my secret: memory anchors. These aren't necessarily New year or Christmas songs. They are the songs that smell like tangerines and sparklers because of your personal history. For me, it’s the 80s and 90s pop my parents played on repeat during New Year's feasts in my childhood. I knew every lyric by heart long before I understood them. Now, those chords instantly transport me to a world of fairy lights and wonder, despite having zero mention of snow or Santa in the lyrics. Dig into your own timeline. What was playing in the background of your childhood holidays? Add those gems to your playlist—they are the most powerful enchantment of all.

2. Movie Marathon

When in need of instant festive immersion, visual storytelling is crucial. My forever go-to is “The Holiday” which is a perfect blend of romance, whimsy and cozy cottage vibes. But let me offer a unique hack for our international community: dive into Soviet New Year’s movies. For example, “The Irony of Fate” or “Carnival Night” are not just old movies. They are the whole cultural phenomenon, a window into the warm, quirky and deeply sentimental holiday spirit of this part of the world. You can watch them with subtitles and get to know with Russian cultural legacy. You’ll get more than a movie, you’ll understand the local New Year’s magic code on a deeper level as well as its humor and its heart. It’s a cultural immersion and a mood-booster in one!

3. Candles

This is a non-negotiable. Lighting a candle is a ritual, a signal to your brain that it’s time to shift gears. But don’t just light any candle. Seek out scents that are the very essence of the season, for instance, tangerine and fir tree. The citrusy sweetness of mandarin mixed with the crisp and clean aroma of a winter forest is a real game-changer! Watch the flame dance and let the scent work its quiet magic.

4. The Vlogmas Universe

Sometimes, you need to borrow someone else’s excitement. Enter “Vlogmas”. Following your favorite (or new!) bloggers as they document their December days—baking, decorating, wrapping, exploring Christmas markets—is like having a cheerful, festive friend in your pocket. Their daily uploads create a countdown calendar of shared joy and simple ideas, gently pulling you into the rhythm of the season. It’s communal celebration for the digital age.

5. Moscow Winter Tapestry: Events

Moscow in December transforms into a festive stage. Don’t just observe it but participate! The Christmas markets (especially the one at the Manege Square) are a sensory overload in the best way possible where you can buy festive coffee, chocolate or something authentic like woollen mittens. The ice-skating rinks that pop up like frozen jewels across the city, from Gorky Park to VDNKh, offer pure, childlike joy. Check out the special New Year’s performances at the Bolshoi or other theatres. While the city is bustling with energy, plug into it!

6. The Architectural Wonderland

You don’t always need a ticket. One of the most effective (and free) mood-enhancers is a simple evening walk. Moscow’s streets, squares, and parks undergo a breathtaking metamorphosis. Stroll down Tverskaya, marvel at the lights on Stary Arbat, get lost in the glittering installations of Zaryadye Park or the fairy-tale decorations of Nikolskaya Street. The city becomes one giant art installation, and you are in it. The collective wonder is contagious.

7. Decorations

You don’t need a 2-meter fir tree to claim the spirit (though if you have one, more power to you!). Start small. You can just decorate a tabletop tree with tiny baubles or drape a string of fairy lights over your bookshelf or window frame. Light is life!

Another option is to make a moodboard. For instance, I print photos that scream "holidays" to me: pictures of friends from last year’s celebration, homemade cookies, beautifully wrapped gifts and inspiring quotes. I string them into a garland and weave battery-powered fairy lights through it (safety first!). If printing isn’t an option, you can create a digital collage and set it as your phone or laptop wallpaper. Thus, every time you unlock your screen, a little burst of "almost there!" will greet you.

8. Festive Outfits

You are part of your own environment. Dressing the part is a powerful act of self-persuasion. The ideal is a full festive outfit from head to toe. But if that feels like too much, start with a single symbolic piece. It can be a ridiculously festive sweater, a hairband with reindeer antlers or earrings shaped like candy canes or tiny fir trees. These items don’t have to be expensive but they carry this New Year’s magic. Wearing them is a quiet but joyful contribution to the festive mood.

9. Preparing Presents

Shift your mindset about gift-giving from a "task" to a "joy-spreading mission". Starting early is key. Brainstorm what would genuinely delight your friends. Spend a Saturday making handmade cards, ordering personalized items, or wrapping presents while watching one of those movies from point #2. The act of thinking about your loved ones and imagining their happiness generates a warm, fulfilling buzz that commercial holiday stress can never provide. It’s a direct +1000 to your internal festive meter.

10. Culinary Rituals

The holidays have a flavor profile. Brew a cup of glühwein (even non-alcoholic versions work wonders) or spicy tea with cinnamon. Bake simple gingerbread cookies the smell of which will bless your entire dorm corridor. Peel a tangerine, the official fruit of the season. These small culinary acts are rituals that anchor you in the "now" of the holiday season.

11. The Kindness Cascade

The New Year spirit is, at its core, about hope and goodwill. Become a source of the magic you seek. Ypu can leave a kind note for a roommate, buy a coffee for the person behind you in line or compliment a stranger’s festive hat. The act of giving out warmth, however small, creates an immense feedback loop of warmth within you. It’s the most powerful magic trick of all!

12. Resolutions Without the Rush

Forget the midnight scramble on December 31st. The best way to craft meaningful New Year's resolutions is to start the conversation with yourself in December. This isn't about pressure but about thoughtful intention.

You can make it into the whole ritual: light the candle, think about the events of whole year, reflect upon it, then brainstorm what you want to change and what you would like to take to the new year with you. Write down your ideas. Use the reflective mood of the season to draft a kinder and smarter list. The way you rephrase it matters as well. Instead of vague vows, explore what "better" truly feels like for you, so be more precise. Then, try a “December Test Drive”: begin one tiny, non-intimidating piece of a goal now, for instance, “read 10 pages a night” or “learn three new phrases in a language every day”. Therefore, by January 1st, you're not starting from zero but you're already in motion, transforming frantic resolution into a gentle and confident beginning.

This shift turns future anxiety into present-day empowerment, making the promise of the new year feel less like a deadline and more like an exciting path you've already started to walk.

Remember, the New Year's mood isn't a switch to be flipped but a garden to be tended. Plant these small seeds of ritual, sensation and intention throughout your December and watch your personal winter wonderland grow. Happy holidays, and may your sparkle be relentless.
