The International Webinar on Sustainable Finance: Prospects for Cooperation

The International Webinar on Sustainable Finance: перспективы сотрудничестваOn September 20, 2024, St. Petersburg School of Economics and Management and the Indian Institute of Management Indore (IIM Indore) held an international workshop on sustainable finance. The objective of the event was to bring together experts, faculty, and students from the two universities to discuss pressing issues related to the implementation of sustainable financial practices in the corporate sector and capital markets. The workshop focused on the need to align financial markets and corporate governance with sustainable development goals, including important topics such as climate change, depletion of natural resources, and social inequality. Representatives from both sides found common ground in their commitment to advancing sustainable finance that will contribute to a more equitable and sustainable future. This collaboration is expected to result in the development of innovative solutions and strategies aimed at accelerating global efforts towards sustainable economic development. One of the key moments of the seminar was the presentation by Olga Alekseeva and Boris Lodyagin, lecturers of the Department of Finance and postgraduate students of the School of Economics and Management. The study was devoted to the analysis of the relationship between the volume of issuance of "green" bonds and the level of economic freedom in various countries. This important study not only caused lively discussions, but also opened up prospects for future joint research projects between HSE and IIM Indore, which emphasizes the importance of academic cooperation.
Egor Vitman, a graduate of the MP "Finance" and a postgraduate student of the School of Economics and Management, also spoke on an important strategic topic, presenting a study on the role of high-quality communication in the field of ESG as a way to protect against a fall in stock prices during ESG crises. The main hypothesis was that companies with high results and transparent communication in the field of ESG experience fewer losses in such situations. The study demonstrated how effective communication in the field of sustainable development can help companies minimize risks in crisis situations, which is becoming increasingly relevant in the modern corporate world.
Representatives from IIM Indore also contributed significantly to the discussion. Vishakha Jaiswal, a PhD student from IIM Indore, presented a paper on the impact of gender diversity in boardrooms on the ESG performance of Indian companies. The study found that even minimal presence of women in the boardrooms has a positive impact on governance, especially in smaller companies, highlighting the need for stronger gender diversity regulations to improve corporate sustainability. Further, Professor Mehul Raithata from IIM Indore presented a paper on the implications of executive overload on corporate sustainability, showing how excessive workload on top managers reduces their focus on ESG and corporate sustainability objectives. His paper highlighted that executive-level work demands can weaken long-term sustainability strategies of companies, which requires implementing governance solutions to balance short-term and long-term objectives. The seminar concluded with acceptance speeches from Varvara Nazarova, Head of the Department of Finance, and Saumya Ranjan Dash, Professor at IIM Indore, who reaffirmed the commitment of both universities to continue academic collaboration and research in the field of sustainable finance.
