Аннотация (на английском языке):

The Cold War introduced a new reality into the material environment, which was little understood by the general public, and intensely feared: ionising radiation. Its threatening character was clear enough from its effects on the bodies of the people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. A few years later, stories about the illness of nurses and researchers who had worked with radioactive material reinforced these fears. Such stories were eagerly reported and depicted in the popular press in many countries. The mystery, fear, and human drama they contained were major attractions for these media.

For explanations of the phenomenon, and for guidance in protecting oneself and one’s children, the public had to rely on experts, who offered very different explanations, from soothing to alarming. My presentation explores the ways in which this new invisible and powerful phenomenon was made materially visible to the public, and the consequences this may have had for popular perceptions of the material environment in the Cold War, of scientific explanations of this environment, and of the impact of the new technology.
