Welcome to HSE St. Petersburg

Sergey Kadochnikov
Director of HSE St. Petersburg

Dear partners, colleagues and friends,

2018 is an important year for our St. Petersburg campus, we celebrate the 20th anniversary of its foundation. Our success and achievements would not have been possible without your contributions, your passion and your support over the years. This is why nurturing and sustaining our carefully created ecosystem of international partnerships is among our top priorities and is an integral part of our development strategy.

We wish to share the anniversary festivities with you - our partners and friends - and so we have arranged the International Partners Week, to be held May 14-16, 2018 in St. Petersburg. There will be a student fair, networking opportunities and, of course, the possibility to tour our campus and witness the latest HSE developments. As always, we will top it off with a diverse cultural programme, showcasing the vibrant city of St. Petersburg - the ‘Northern Venice’ and the ‘Cultural Capital of Russia’, UNESCO Heritage Site and recipient of the World Travel Award Europe.

So, please save the date! We would love to see you there.

Participation in Partners Week promises to be fruitful not only for universities who already collaborate with HSE - St. Petersburg, but also for universities who would like to foster new ties and who are, perhaps, considering HSE - St. Petersburg as a potential partner.

I hope that, over the three-day programme of discussions, meetings and cultural activities, you will take advantage of the excellent opportunities to get to know our campus, our other partners, the city and Russian culture, and that you will return home full of inspiration and new ideas.

See you soon in St. Petersburg!

In 2018, our International Partners Week (IPW) is themed ‘Universities: How to Be a Step Ahead’, in order to highlight the importance of international academic collaboration and share best practices in addressing the challenges of the ongoing ‘academic revolution’: massification, commercialization, digitalization and globalization of HE.

The main idea behind IPW is to provide an overview of the recent achievements and development strategy of the Higher School of Economics, as well as general information on HE in Russia. We want to give attendees an insight into the current challenges and trends in the age of digital internationalisation. The programme will feature case studies of success stories – examples of how to stay a step ahead of the challenges. This will be complemented by our partners’ case studies, a student fair, networking opportunities and a diverse cultural programme. IPW participants will experience the marvellous city of St. Petersburg - a UNESCO Heritage site, recipient of the World Travel Europe Award and one of TripAdvisor’s Top 20 destinations.

IPW is part of the annual ‘Education and Global Cities’ international conference, this year entitled ‘Education and New Technologies of the Development: Global South’. It will take place at HSE St. Petersburg on May 17-18, 2018. Interested IPW participants are welcome to stay longer and listen to the international keynote speakers, attend plenary sessions and participate in the round tables across the conference programme.

IPW offers a range of networking opportunities. The event is designed especially for our colleagues dealing with internationalisation and partnership issues, for those working with International Offices, and for those managing outgoing mobility flows and student exchanges with Russia.

Please see the IPW programme for further details and register for the event.

Practical Information

International Partners Week will take place at HSE — St. Petersburg on May 14-16, 2018. It is the beginning of the so-called ‘White Nights’, heralding the arrival of summer. This is the best time to experience the city, Russian culture and Russian traditions.

Participants are invited to arrive on Sunday, May 13 or Monday, May 14.

St. Petersburg is easy to reach by plane — most destinations offer flights to Pulkovo Airport (LED), either direct or with a connection in Moscow. Alternatively, the high- speed train ‘Sapsan’ (4-hour trip) is also available for those guests wishing to travel to St. Petersburg from Moscow.

Please remember that you may need a visa to enter Russia. See the ‘Visa’ section for further information.

We will reserve accommodation in several downtown hotels and negotiate the best prices for IPW participants. Accommodation options will be communicated to registered participants via email.

There is no participation fee. All transfers, coffee breaks, meals and cultural events within the IPW programme are covered by HSE. Support is available via email: ipw-spb@hse.ru

We kindly ask our partners and friends to register before March 15, 2018.

Please remember that you may need a visa to enter Russia. If you do, please indicate this in your registration form.

HSE St. Petersburg will issue official invitation letters for ‘humanitarian visas’ and provide assistance to IPW participants requiring Russian visas. Please note: this invitation is not a visa. It does not give the holder permission to enter Russia. It is a document necessary for the visa application. A ‘humanitarian visa’ is usually issued free of charge.

You can find out what your visa requirements are by going to the website of the Russian Embassy or Consulate in your home country, see this website.

It usually takes up to 30 days to issue and send out a visa invitation letter, and up to 10 days for a visa to be issued from the date of visa application.
