On April 21 took place an event as a part of the lecture series 'HSE Lectures' from joined project of Russian National Library (St.Petersburg) and HSE University. The presentation from our colleagues was dedicated to the boundaries between "student" and "adult" science. Dmitry Ivanov and Ekaterina Semenova described how students involved in academic activities define their status. Many informants noted that they cannot call themselves "scientists" and see this status as something unattainable, choosing the more liberal definition of "researcher". They examined the factors that shape the differences between students and "adult scientists", as well as the diversity of Student Research/Scientific Societies. After the lecture, an active discussion unfolded, in which not only researchers took part, but also members of the Student Scientific/Research Societies of St. Petersburg universities themselves, and even listeners who were not part of the academic environment. The speakers and listeners discussed the non‑obvious markers of the "scientist" status and the differences in academic careers across various scientific fields.

The series of presentations continued with participation in the regular seminar of the Center for Youth Research 'Soc UP'. The team presented a report on April 30, providing a detailed examination of how "student" science and Student Research/Scientific Societies are structured, how a student’s career unfolds in an academic environment, and what future students involved in science envision for themselves. The discussion provided excellent ideas for further analysis of the material.

Both reports were created as part of the work on the project «At the Start of Academic Careers: Student Participation in Scientific Communities and Initiatives as a Vector for the Development of National Science», supported by the Russian Foundation for Basic Research.
