CALL FOR PAPERS. International seminar on "Global Longevity: Advances and Challenges"

A two-&-half-day International seminar on "Global Longevity: Advances and Challenges". To be held at the HSE, St. Petersburg, Russia, September 16-18, 2020.

Organized by: International Laboratory for Population and Health in cooperation with Department of Sociology (Campus in St. Petersburg) at the National Research University Higher School of Economics.

Recently observed stagnation and reversals in life expectancy in some high-income countries and the growing importance of chronic diseases in developing countries warn about the ongoing fundamental changes in global health. The new stage of health progress brings challenges for all global regions and may lead to further increases in mortality disparities across and within countries. The growing evidence about the emerging threats for sustainable health progress calls for continuous monitoring based on reliable and internationally comparable data, especially for countries with less developed statistical systems.

The seminar will be focused on two main issues related to the monitoring of global trends in longevity: a) ongoing health transitions and diversities in mortality trends in developed and developing countries and b) existing and newly emerging data collection systems and producing real data-based mortality estimates for developing countries.

The seminar is a follow-up of the satellite meeting at the HMD symposium in May 2019 (see https://www.mortality.org/Public/Events.php for details).

Themes of the seminar (non-exhaustive list):

• Global, regional, and national longevity: trends, disparities, and future prospects;
• Monitoring global mortality change: methodological and data challenges;
• Open data: obstacles and opportunities.

This seminar will bring together international scholars with a strong interest in mortality at global, regional, national, and sub-national levels and experts interested in population-level mortality data and related quality and methodological issues.

Guidelines for abstract submission

1. All submissions must be made in PDF format.
2. The submission should contain the title and abstract. The abstract should not exceed 350 words. The contributor(s) should also kindly provide their name/s, affiliation, and contact information.

There are no participation fees, but participants are expected to cover their own travel and accommodation expenses.
