Social University Mission
Universities all around the world try hard to leave their 'ivory tower' where they have been in their comfort zone for a long time. Today, a university takes a controversial position in society: being unsure about its role, it is at the level between an entrepreneurial university and a medieval academy.
At the moment, in different parts of the world, we can see an intent to build a more 'socially-oriented university' with a focus on a regional approach from students. Such an approach includes innovations, entrepreneurship and social responsibility.
A socially responsible university is a university which can voluntarily integrate social and environmental problems into the usual academic and research activities and the relations with their interlocutors or interest groups.
The topic of the 'Third University Mission' has been on the agenda and in the education researchers' focus of attention for a long time. Many modern universities are not only educational institutions which perform academic and research functions—as a tradition, two main missions—but also become large intellectual corporations which understand and take responsibility for their contribution to the development of the territory of its presence in the broad sense—social and economic, technological and innovative. With these words, the vice rector Valeria Kasamara started the first report on the Third University Mission of HSE in 2020.
Our Laboratory took these words to heart and now has a research direction and several projects related to the 'Third University Mission'. We believe that a 'sustainable university' is a university which thinks about its internal and external interested parties and cares about the present and the future of the society surrounding it.
