International conference «Minorities and conflicts: Asian and African countries in modern world» was held

On 9-10 of October Center of Asian and African Studies together with Department of Asian and African Studies of NRU HSE, St. Petersburg held an international scientific conference on problems of studying minorities - «Minorities and conflicts: Asian and African countries in modern world». Besides Russian researchers from St. Petersburg and Moscow, researchers and experts from Sothern Africa, Turkey, Iran, Armenia and Southern Korea took part in the conference.

On 9-10 of October Center of Asian and African Studies together with Department of Asian and African Studies of NRU HSE, St. Petersburg held an international scientific conference on problems of studying minorities - «Minorities and conflicts: Asian and African countries in modern world». Besides Russian researchers from St. Petersburg and Moscow, researchers and experts from Sothern Africa, Turkey, Iran, Armenia and Southern Korea took part in the conference.

The conference was focused on theoretical aspects of studying interactions between majority and minorities, problems of racial, confessional and other minorities in multicultural communities, features of politics referring to minority groups in Asian and African countries. Besides that, participants presented results of their research projects oriented on studying on minorities’ modern state and their role in modern social life in several Asian countries – the Baloch in Iran, the Yezidis in Yemen, Korean migrants in Japan. Significant part of the reports was dedicated to minorities’ role in organization and developing of turbulence processes in the Near East in context of analysis of the Arab Spring phenomenon and functioning of The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) which is declared to be a terroristic organization by the most part of the countries.

Research circle discussed during the conference, represents research problems of CAAS scientific project «Minority and Majority in Asian-African area: “ethnicity” vs “efficiency” in context of socio-cultural interaction». Participants of the conference noticed relevance and practical significance of discussed problems in context of social-politics processes in the world, and expressed interest in organization of such conferences in future.

Conference is planning to result in publishing of materials’ series in scientific publications in “Asia and Africa Today”, “St. Petersburg Annual of Asian and African Studies” in particular, and in mass media.
