Over the course of the two-hour lecture, students traced the evolution of Russia’s financial system from the Tsarist era to the present day, focusing on key institutional turning points, the logic behind the banking sector’s development, and the formation of market infrastructure. The speakers also discussed the current structure of the financial system, as well as how the COVID-19 shock and subsequent disruptions affected markets, economic behaviour, and policy responses, shaping the environment in which financial institutions and firms operate today.

The lecture was followed by an extended Q&A. Students asked practical questions about how businesses adapt to today’s conditions and what fintech innovations are emerging as especially relevant in the new reality.
