"Russia–USSR–Russia: Features of the Development of Russian Economic Thought in the 19th – Early 21st Centuries

From November 11th to 12th, 2025, the academic conference "Russia–USSR–Russia: Features of the Development of Russian Economic Thought in the 19th – Early 21st Centuries" was held at the HSE Moscow campus. Eighty-eight papers were presented, covering various research schools, theories, individual economists, and the mutual influence of various authors and ideas. Olga Nikolaevna Volkova, Associate Professor of the Department of Finance at the St. Petersburg School of Economics and Management, presented her paper, "From Reliability to Relevance: How the Understanding of Fairness in Accounting and Finance Has Changed from the Mid-20th Century to the Present." She demonstrated that at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries, accountants' and financial analysts' understanding of fairness as a true and unbiased reflection of company information gave way to relevance, that is, its usefulness for investment decisions. Despite this significant shift in emphasis, both concepts correspond to different definitions of fairness.
