HSE in Saint Petersburg Is Reaching New Heights
On Saturday September 3, 2016, students, lecturers and staff members at HSE in Saint Petersburg celebrated the start of a new academic year at a world travel themed event. One of the halls was turned into a high-speed aircraft that inspired the participants to take off and reach new heights.
During the four hour journey, the aircraft ‘piloted’ by 3rd-year students Alexander Nikonov and Ivan Terukov landed in many marvelous and welcoming countries.
First the guests explored the space of the Sibur Arena, where HSE partners and students communities organized master classes, test drives, and other activities. The participants had a lot of options for entertainment, there was something for everyone, from riding gyroscooters, battles with the Ufights HSE SPb project and a Brain Ring contest by ‘Intellectual HSE’ to cozy tea parties with cakes and the characters of Alice in Wonderland organized by the HSE Literature club, as well as shopping at the HSE Store SPb.
The activities proceeded with a live concert organized by HSE students and university partners.
Sergey Kadochnikov, Director of HSE Saint Petersburg, addressed the participants and looked back over the achievements of HSE students and researchers in the previous academic year.
In the 2015-2016 academic year, 1650 students were enrolled on new bachelor’s and master’s programmes, including those programmes taught in English. In 2016 the master’s programme in Finance was launched. This is an English taught double degree programme with the University College London.
Two international laboratories – The International Centre for Health Economics, Management, and Policy and The International laboratory of Game Theory and Decision Making – also opened in 2016. The launch of these labs helped to attract world leading researchers in these fields and to make HSE in Saint Petersburg an international platform for conferences and scholar meetings.
The university is changing, evolving and improving its position in the international rankings. The Higher School of Economics is the only Russian university to win a place in the top 100 QS rankings of universities under 50. HSE also took first place among Russian universities in subject rankings for Sociology and Economics & Econometrics (101-150 globally). So, now it’s time to build on these achievements.
