About the space of the modern museum: The conference in the State Hermitage Museum

The scientific-practical conference “The Space of the Modern Museum: Architecture, Exhibitions, and Public” was held on December 18. The conference took place within the framework of the cooperation between HSE St. Petersburg and the State Hermitage Museum. This event became a platform for discussing topical issues of the interaction of the museum space with modern audience.

During the first part of the discussion, the participants considered the role of the museum in the cultural life of the city. Evgeny Anisimov called on the audience to develop their cultural temperament in museums. Elena Omelchenko presented her concept of creating a museum of youth subcultures and explained the cultural practices that distinguish young people from different regions. Valery Gordin, together with Elizaveta Dementieva and Anna Kudelkina (4th year students of the “International Business and Management” programme) and Ekaterina Sergeeva (1st year student of the “Cultural and Event Tourism Management” programme) presented the first results of the research dedicated to marketing models of interaction of the world art museums with young people. In continuation of the topic, the Head of the Hermitage Youth Center, Sofia Kudryavtseva, shared the Hermitage's best practices, and explained how young people bring their vision of the world in a classic museum.

The second part of the conference - "Exhibition in the modern museum as a complex project" - was devoted to the practical aspects of the museum. Dmitry Kharshak reported about the design of museum products. The conversation of Ksenia Malicz was about architectural exhibitions in the Hermitage and how to fit the history of modern architecture into the historical interior. Andrei Shelutto and the staff of the State Hermitage Museum - Natela Teturashvili and Ekaterina Bychkova explained new formats of interaction with the audience, including art mediation and inclusive communication with the audience.
