Course Syllabus

Abstract

Lecture series cover key topics of supply chain planning, such as sustainable global supply chains, intermodal transport networks, inter-organizational systems in logistics, etc. The course is based on interactive teaching style with intensive student participation. The course combines lectures and group-work components, class discussions, student’s group work presentations, case-studies.

  • to develop students’ analytical and decision making skills related to supply chain planning.

  • Understand the challenges of uncertain economic environment in order to discuss ongoing research while using various concepts from the materials offered in the course
  • Demonstrate deep knowledge and critical understanding of theories, principles, concepts and methodologies of global supply chain design.
  • Examine and reflect on design, planning, and execution of intermodal and synchromodal network services
  • Use strong analytical skills and apply them to reflect on global supply chain design decisions while using a quantitative tool
  • Examine and critically appraise quantitative tools relevant in order to explore the global supply chain scenarios
  • Plan and perform independent research projects in the area of logistics applying the advanced concepts of integrated supply chain planning.

  • Introduction to Global Supply Chain Design
    Introduction and key concepts, the role of external resources in the pursuit of competitive advantage.
  • Intermodal Networks
    Example of the Rotterdam port in terms of efficient intermodal transportation networks.
  • Interorganizational systems in Global Logistics
    Peculiarities of designing supply chains by considering Free Trade Agreement, Rules of Origin, Duty Drawback.
  • Sustainable Supply Chains
    Company’ stakeholder map. Consideration of sustainable SC framework, with illustrative examples. Students are encouraged to participate in the discussion related to the CASE ‘Apple’.
  • International sourcing and SCM
    Interaction patterns for different services. Students are asked to reflect on the CASE by Roger Caracappa ‘Package deals for the Estée Lauder Companies’
  • Sourcing and SCM capabilities
    The 4Cs of PSM, Methods for specifying services, Procurement effectiveness matrix. Students are asked to reflect on the CASE Metalcraft
  • System dynamics and emerging markets of logistics
    Benchmarking: approaches and examples. Overview of the new logistics markets, its’ logistics techniques and attitudes.
  • Approaches to integrated supply chain planning
    Design and implementation steps for supplier scorecard development, logistics performance and risk management.
  • International supply chain management
    GBOM (Global Bill of Materials) as a considerable issue of the international supply chain planning. Analytical approach to defining the GBOM. Numerical examples.
  • The role of procurement in competitiveness of companies
    General levers for improving procurement category performance, Economic Value Added (EVA), Procurement value drivers. Students are asked to reflect on the CASE Unifine Richardson.
  • Category management; procurement skills and maturity development
    An example of spend categorization, spend analysis. CASE’ Eagle Industries’. Students are asked to consider the following questions: 1. Is there room for improvement in office supplies sourcing? Please explain. 2. How should office supplies be sourced?
  • Total cost of ownership and Supplier relationship management
    Students are given the case overview and encouraged to discussion on topics related. CASE Hillview hospital, CASE Hydrogen Cyanide Co. Competitive priorities from the procurement perspective: cost, quality, time, flexibility, innovation, sustainability.
  • Advanced Topics (research options, perspectives and challenges)
    Importance of supply chain decisions: case overview, The integrated supply chain framework, Changes of the innovations’ nature, Seven Phases of the Product Innovation Cycle. Case study related to supply chain strategies for different companies.
