Course Syllabus

Abstract

The course “Cross-cultural Communications in Asia” is focused on improvement of better understanding of Asian cultures. The program will help develop the correct point of view on understanding the cultural aspects in the era of globalization. During the course, we will focus on overcoming culture shock and conflicts for integration to the international society. The practical part of the course will be focused on improving business negotiation skills. Examples from the business life of entrepreneurs working in Asia will be given. To master the course, students will have the opportunity to take part in some group games and accomplish case studies.

  • The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the peculiarities of Asian cultures, to teach successful integration into the international environment and effective communication with representatives of Asian cultures.

  • Learn to overcome culture shock and adapt to the international community.
  • Use modern scientific approaches, models and methods for identifying cultures and build own behavior based on them.
  • Develop an understanding of the cultural specifics of Asia.
  • Analyze and adequately respond to various cross-cultural situations that arise in the process of interaction with representatives of Asian countries.
  • Improve negotiation skills with representatives of ASEAN and China and Japan.
  • Master the business etiquette standards adopted in Asia.

Course Contents

  • Block I – 1st year of the course. Scientific Approaches to The Study of Cross-Cultural Communications.
  • Block 2. - 1st year of the course. Types of communication for Business protocol.
  • Block 3. – 2nd year of the course. Cultural features and specifics of negotiating with representatives of China, Southeast Asia, South Korea and Japan.

Assessment Elements

  • non-blocking Control Test
    The Test is written at the end of the Block 2 of the study of the discipline. The Test runs in SmartLMS consisting of 20 questions. The Test time: 25 minutes.
  • non-blocking Accumulative grade
    Quiz in a form of a written test or in a form of a Kahoot at the end of each lecture based on the main aspects discussed during the lecture.
  • non-blocking Oral Presentation
    Oral presentation at seminars on a chosen topic. The speech takes place in English and is written based on a studied material from Block 1 and Block 2 and also with a help of required and optional reading given in the program. Max time of the speech: 15 minutes. Students are expected to read literature recommended in the syllabus, as well as to search for extra sources, especially in order to get most recent information on the topic of their presentation. The report begins with the presentation of the topic, abstract and objectives to the audience and ends with conclusions and a list of references. 1. Content of the report: - corresponds to the stated topic, fully reveals the topic; - should be made in an academic language; - reporter should present logical and convincing argumentation, complete and reasoned answers to the questions; - lack of factual errors; - reporter should understand the main terms of the report, if necessary – explain their meaning to the audience; - appropriate conclusions to the stated objectives. 2. Presentation design: - the presence of illustrative material (maps, diagrams, tables, photos) with an indication of the source; - a list of sources, drawn up in accordance with the requirements. 3. Speech: - it is not allowed to read in advance prepared text on any medium; - the roles of the participants are evenly distributed; - compliance with the time limit (15 minutes).
  • non-blocking Active work at seminars
    During the seminars, students also should receive points for participating in the discussion of the presented topic, asking questions to speakers after the Oral Presentations, expressing their own opinions related to the discussed topic, answering questions correctly asked by teacher and the one who presented the topic. Active work also includes case studies and role games.
  • non-blocking Exam
    The Exam is a Test in SmartLMS, consisting of 40 questions of different formats. Test is written during an exam week. The response time is 45 minutes.
