International Conference for Early Career Researchers “Cultural Heritage in East and Southeast Asia: Traditions, Transformations, Identity”

The Department for Chinese, South and Southeast Asian Studies, HSE University – Saint Petersburg, together with the Research and Educational Group “Folklore and Cultural Heritage in Asian Countries” (the Institute of Asian and African Studies), invite undergraduate students, master’s students, doctoral students, and early career researchers to participate in an interdisciplinary conference focusing on the cultural heritage of East and Southeast Asia.

Format: hybrid (in person at HSE University – Saint Petersburg and online)

Working languages: Russian, English

Application deadline: March 15, 2026

The conference aims to provide a platform for scholarly discussion of a wide range of topics, including but not limited to:

  • Challenges of preserving the heritage of ethnic minorities in multiethnic societies.
  • Tradition and modernity: the preservation and transformation of ancient cultural forms in the era of globalization.
  • Museum collections and issues of representation of traditional culture.
  • Intangible cultural heritage: languages, folklore, theatre, music, and festivals.
  • Heritage and digital technologies: virtual museums, digital archives, and the popularization of traditional culture on social media.
  • Cultural exchange: historical trajectories of influence and contemporary cultural dialogue in East and Southeast Asia.


Forms of participation

  • Oral presentation (in person / online)
  • Participation as a listener

No participation fee is required. Travel and accommodation expenses for non-resident participants are not covered. Visa invitation letters may be issued for international participants if required.
