About the Department

The Department of Foreign Languages runs foreign language modules for students of the Higher School of Economics in St. Petersburg. An experienced team of instructors, researchers, and education managers are involved into teaching, educational, and research projects.

Instructors of English, German, French, Chinese, and Portuguese have international language proficiency certificates, teaching certificates, and research degrees in pedagogy, linguistics, literature, and philology. We implement EGP, EAP, ESP, ESAP language modules drawing on cutting edge  methods and technologies of teaching at the university. Individualization of educational trajectories, use of  modern technological solutions in teaching foreign languages, development of autonomy and "soft skills", development of critical thinking, communication and media literacy – the foundations of our programs.

The Department provides tuition for international students in Russian as a foreign language. Students studying at the HSE and academic exchange students have the opportunity to learn Russian, get acquainted with the culture of Russia and St. Petersburg via a language module during the semester.

We consistently work on methodological challenges, improve the quality of education and motivating students, seek for modern approaches to learning, introduce pedagogical innovations. We offer professional development and retraining programs for teachers. An important area of our work is the implementation of innovative programs of additional education for everyone who wants to invest in their future and learn from the best.

The research of the Department of Foreign Languages is closely related to the solution of issues of applied linguistics, sociolinguistics, philology, education and pedagogy.
