Annotation:

In his talk, Dr. Martin Emanuel will outline his current project in the making about Soviet-Swedish collaboration in the space sciences during the Cold War. The project focuses on two particular collaborations in astrophysics and space physics carried out during the 1970s. The Swedish-Soviet partnerships built on contacts and exchanges during the 1960s between a host of state, private, and semiprivate institutions in Sweden and the Soviet Union. Dependent on state funding, between-state agreements, and advanced instrumentation and engineering skills, the projects, like other space science projects, engaged not only scientists, but state bureaucrats, politicians, and state design bureau engineers. In short, they need to be considered as more than purely scientific. In focusing on the collaborative project in astrophysics, in which a Swedish-developed instrument was launched with the Soviet Interkosmos-16 satellite in 1975/76, the talk will address issues of science diplomacy and West-to-East technology transfer, relating them to Swedish neutrality policy.
