From the White Sea to the North Sea

Seminar of the Laboratory of Environmental and Technological History HSE Kanal Griboedova 123 room 409  From the White Sea to the North SeaRuth Maclennan

Ruth Maclennan, artist and writer will discuss her research, in particular her recent films, Call of North and From Time to Time at Sea. The films were shot in Arctic Russia and the far north of Scotland. A polyphony of voices tells overlapping stories about relationships with the sea and land and dramatizes the changes that international politics and climate change are making on peoples lives in the North. In the context of climate change and this political upheaval Maclennan will discuss the ethical and practical question, what can art do?

Ruth Maclennan’s work includes video installations, photography, bookworks, performance, interdisciplinary, collaborative and curatorial projects. Maclennan exhibits widely internationally, in Europe, USA, Japan, Australia and Central Asia, Korea, Taiwan and Ireland. Her films are held in public and private collections, including Wellcome Collection and Centre Pasqu’Art, Biel. She has a Masters in Fine Art from Goldsmiths College, and in Modern Languages from Cambridge University.  She has recently completed a PhD by practice in Fine Art at the Royal College of Art, on experiences of climate change in northern Russia and Scotland, following her expeditions to the White Sea and around the Northern Isles of Scotland.  LUX Artists’ Moving Image distributes her films.

All are welcome!
