Who we are

Research Group "Machine Learning and Social Computing" has arisen from students’ projects and scientific research combining Appearance of open classrooms on programming and data analysis as well as the first students’ projects supported by Laboratory of Sociology in Education and Science, emergence of the minor “Data Science” in 2015 led to formation of the first cohorts of the bachelor students, who are interested in machine learning methods and social computing. Data Science minor is very popular among students from the different academic disciplines, as from the socioeconomic as from humanitarian specialties, which differ in the motivation and their mathematical background. This variety forms the creative environment and gives us a chance to generate new and fresh ideas for researches.

During this period first scientific papers were published in collaboration with students of Minor and Sociology Department. The subsequent opening of the Master’s Programme "The Analysis of Big Data in Business, Economy and Society" in 2016 filled up group of students with future specialists in applied mathematics and informatics.

On this background the cross-disciplinary team of teachers of departments of Applied Mathematics, Sociology, Economics, jointly with students, makes the decision to unite already existing work in the direction of a research on various aspects of social algorithms into the Research Group. There were not only scientific aim for developing this group, but also pedagogical - to give to all participants of Group a work experience in the research team in the international scientific community, including experience of work preparation and participation in the international conferences, interactions with foreign scientists. Besides, all young participants of Research Group, play an important role in the development of a "digital" branch of education in a campus, working as Teaching Assistants and developing and supporting areas of our Group interests.
