Abstract

The course covers the following general topics: - Observation - Interviewing in qualitative research - Focus groups - Secondary data analysis. Reading and discussion of some widely known studies is combined with practical exercises on development of research design and specific tools.

  • introduce students to the basics of research methodology in social sciences, and give a brief overview of the most relevant research methods.

  • be able to formulate research question and choose appropriate methodology
  • understand the basic idea and the differences between main research methods: survey, anthropological/ biographical study, online research etc.
  • know the ethical requirements and limitations for different research methods

Course Contents

  • Observation
    The topic discusses the objectives and features of the method, the general implementation procedure, advantages and disadvantages. Typology of observations. Included and not included observation.
  • Interviewing in qualitative research
    The topic discusses the objectives and features of the method, the general implementation procedure, advantages and disadvantages.
  • Focus groups
    The topic discusses the objectives and features of the method, the general implementation procedure, advantages and disadvantages.
  • Secondary data analysis
    The topic considers data sources for secondary analysis, advantages and disadvantages of secondary data analysis.

    Экзамен проводится 16 июня 2020 г. в 10-30 (резервный день – 29 июня, 10-30) в письменной форме (тест) с использованием внешнего синхронного прокторинга. Экзамен проводится на платформе Moodle, прокторинг на платформе Экзамус (https://hse.student.examus.net). Необходимо заранее пройти проверку своего компьютера по ссылке<https://lms.demo.examus.net/syscheck_st> (работает только в Google Chrome). Если студент не имеет веб-камеры/микрофона или вообще не имеет ПК, он должен немедленно сообщить в учебный офис об этом для решения вопроса о сдаче экзамена. К экзамену необходимо подключиться за 15 минут. На платформе Экзамус доступно тестирование системы. Компьютер студента должен удовлетворять следующим требованиям: https://elearning.hse.ru/data/2020/05/07/1544135594/Технические%20требования%20к%20ПК%20студента.pdf) Для участия в экзамене студент обязан: заранее зайти на платформу прокторинга, провести тест системы, включить камеру и микрофон, подтвердить личность (авторизоваться в Экзамус<https://mail2.hse.ru/owa/se.student.examus.net/>). Правила прохождения экзаменов с прокторингом в Экзамусе по ссылке<https://elearning.hse.ru/proctoring_instrution>. Во время экзамена студентам запрещено: общаться (в социальных сетях, с людьми в комнате), пользоваться поисковыми системами интернета, учебниками, конспектами, списывать. Кратковременным нарушением связи во время экзамена считается прерывание связи до 10 минут. Долговременным нарушением связи во время экзамена считается прерывание связи 10 минут и более. При долговременном нарушении связи студент не может продолжить участие в экзамене. Процедура пересдачи аналогична процедуре сдачи.
