Research and Projects

The Bachelor’s Program on Political Science & World Politics provides students with a wide variety of activities to advance their research skills in Comparative Politics, International Relations, Governance and related disciplines.

Course Projects

Starting from the 2nd year of study, each student is to prepare his / her own course research project under the supervision of a faculty member. The topics are usually proposed by the lecturers based on their current research projects, so to choose a supervisor it is better to learn their scientific interest first. However, students are more than welcome to submit their own proposal than can be approved by the faculty. At the end of the 4th year students present their final research project, which is meant to have solid theoretical, methodological and empirical grounding.

Curriculum

Research training takes a serious portion of the program curriculum. Research Seminars are held each week starting from the second semester of the 1st year. There students will learn the basics of research design, key methodologies and techniques, as well as will be able to discuss their current research project and get useful feedback from colleagues. Several courses on methods are organized, introducing cutting-edge quantitative and qualitative techniques of social and political inquiry. Graduates of the program are globally competitive experts that can continue working as researchers and analysts in political, social and economic spheres.

Some students may enhance their knowledge in data analysis and social informatics, if they choose the “Data Science” minor for the 2nd and 3rd years of study.

Extra-Curriculum

Senior students are usually involved in the projects carried out by the faculty members. These activities include the Research Teams (https://www.hse.ru/en/science/scifund/nug/) organized by HSE, as well as internship in scientific laboratories established in campus.

To master their knowledge and skills in research methods, students are welcome to join the IPSA-HSE Summer School, held annually in July-August and attracting the best professional instructors from all over the world. The School is co-organized by the Higher School of Economics and the International Political Science Association.
