Guidelines on the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in academic works

The following Guidelines establish the rules for the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) models by students when completing all types of academic assignments, including course assignments, term papers, BA theses, and other forms of control within the educational programme “Political Science and World Politics”. These Guidelines are binding for all students enrolled in the Programme. The Guidelines apply to the following forms of control: homework, in-class assignments, tests, group and individual projects, term papers, final qualifying theses (BA theses), Project Proposals, presentations, essays, reading responses, policy briefs, and any other written work stipulated by course syllabi.

These Guidelines are developed in accordance with:

  • the current academic norms of HSE University;
  • the Regulation on the organisation of verification of written academic works for plagiarism, use of generative models, and placement of final qualifying works on the HSE corporate website (portal) dated 16 April 2026;
  • decisions of the Academic Council of the Programme “Political Science and World Politics”;

For each specific assignment, the policy on AI use (including the list of permitted and prohibited actions) is set out in the course syllabus, in the section giving the assignment description. Students are obliged to read the syllabus carefully before starting any assignment. In case of ambiguity, the student must seek clarification from the instructor.
