Seminar 'Social Market Economy'

On October 8, St. Petersburg School of Economics and Management is helding a seminar on one of the most known models of the market economy. At the behest of HSE University – St. Petersburg and Konrad Adenauer Foundation, the professor Michael Wohlgemuth will present a concept of social market economy. This concept laid behind the German’s economy combining the principles of free market and social equalization.

The term 'social market economy' is widely used by economists and politicians in debates about the further development of Germany and the European Union.

At the seminar, prof. Wohlgemuth will explain the theoretical foundations of the concept, and the results of its practical implementation.


Prof. Wohlgemuth is the Director of the think tank Open Europe Berlin, Professor of Political Economy at the private University Witten/Herdecke, Adacemic Director of the Foundation for Economic Governance and Public Law in Liechtenstein. 

He is also Affiliated Fellow at the Walter Eucken Institute (Freiburg), and Tutor at the post-graduate programme 'Social Market Economy' of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation.

Prof. Wohlgemuth has an MA in Economics from Albert Ludwig University of  Freiburg, a PhD from Friedrich Schiller University of Jena, and a second PhD, from the private University of Witten/Herdecke.

His major fields of research are in new institutional economics, economic theories of politics (public choice theory), theories of economic systems, evolutionary economics, social and legal philosophy and history of ideas.

These have applications mainly concerning European governance and integration, institutions and processes of democratic governance, globalization and inter-jurisdictional competition, public opinion formation and political leadership and political reform.

Prof. Wohlgemuth writes extensively on these subjects and comments in newspapers, magazines, and academic publications.

Participants of the seminar will have a chance to have a talk with the professor, and ask him questions.  

They also will have an opportunity to get books on social market economy published by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation.
