Course Syllabus

Abstract

This course examines the theory and practice of urbanism. During the course, students will have an opportunity to get acquainted with the history of urbanization and with a variety of theoretical understanding of the specifics of the urban way of life, the process of the growth and development of the cities. The course introduces the history, international and Russian experience of developing concepts and strategies for spatial development, regional and urban master planning, their strengths, and weaknesses.

  • The student defines the main concepts of the course, uses new terminology, recognises different theoretical approaches to the understanding of urban space, expresses his/her point of view
  • The student applies the acquired knowledge of theoretical approaches to the sociological study of urban space, the processes of segregation, inequality, gentrification while performing the tasks

    Working оn seminars involves completing the lecturer's assignments during classes, reading texts at home, and completing assignments for seminars at home. • Be ready to: • read and discuss literature • analyze videos, cases • conduct mini-research and present the results • make PowerPoint presentations

    Is held in the form of presentations of a group projects. The task of a group project is to apply the knowledge and optics learned in the course to an analysis of city space or urban practices. Students must form mini-groups of 4-5 people, formulate a topic, and coordinate it with the course instructor. The topic cannot be general descriptive, but must have a clear research focus. The following components should be included in the presentation: 1. Research topic, its relevance and significance. 2. Theoretical framework of the research. 3. The brief introduction of the research design: logic of the study, methods, sample, the description of the empirical data for analysis 4. Analysis, results and conclusions. Recommended stages of work on the project: 1. Choose, formulate and justify topic for the research project. 2. Search for relevant scientific literature. 3. Choose a research paradigm and theoretical framework. 4. Develop a research design. 5. Develop a research tool. 6. Collect empirical data. 7. Analyze data. 8. Prepare the final presentation.

    The final control will be in the form of a test consisting of 25 questions (single choice, multiple choice, open-ended questions). The maximum number of points scored will be 40 The examination has a time limit. The time to complete the test is 1 hour and 20 minutes.
