Course Syllabus

Abstract

Cities constitute the backbone of modern politics: from the Ancient Greek's polis to contemporary metropolis and global cities, they provide space and resources for major political battles and mundane everydaylife operations. The elective course on Power and Urban Politics is designed for BA-level students of "Political Science and World Politics" program. It covers theoretical and methodological foundations of studying the cities as well as policy implications for urban development and institutional design of urban governance. Students will learn about the varieties of theoretical approaches to urban politics and build their own analytical kit for assessing urban policy instruments and their implementation. Also, they will discuss critical challenges faced by the cities and propose promising re-sponses that can make our cities better places for living and acting politically.

• Reading responses
  Reading responses must be delivered on a weekly basis one day prior to the seminar. It must be 1000-1500 words long, contain a summary of the argument and its critical assessment, and 2-3 questions for in-class discussion. Plagiarism is strictly prohibited.
• Quizzes
• Case study presentation
  The case study will be exercised individually or in groups (depend-ing on the class size) and will take upon the issues of urban govern-ance in one of the European / Asian country. The students must use conceptual and analytical tools delivered in the course and present their findings in 7-10 minutes talk followed by a constructive and collegial class discussion
