Course Syllabus

Abstract

Within the frame of the course students are encouraged to pay attention to the phenomena of ethnicity and its using as a political resource, the influence of ethnic and national issues in modern society and politics. They will be also introduced to the main theoretical approaches to the study of nations and nationalism. The problems of nation-building, national identity formation and different variants of nationalism in contemporary world will be in the focus of class discussions. The students will learn also about ethnic (ethnonational) policy: the notion, main directions and aims, different policy models of multiethnic states, the protection minority’s rights.

Learning Objectives

• The main objective is to give an idea of phenomena of ethnicity and its using as a political resource, the influence of ethnic and national issues in modern society and politics

Expected Learning Outcomes

• Student is capable of allocating tasks among project participants as part of planning the political projects; student is also capable of processing the respective paperwork, including the performance specifications for each participant.
• Student is capable of executing applied analysis of the political phenomena and political processes by using political science methods
• Student is capable of retrieving, collecting, processing and analyzing information relevant for achieving goals in the professional field.
• Student is capable of reporting the results of the information retrieval and analysis, academic or applied research she/he has conducted

Course Contents

• Introduction to the course
  Course content review. Assessment and requirements.
• What is ethnicity? Ethnicity as a political resource
  Ethnicity, race and nation. Ethnicity and class. Ethnicity without groups. What is the relationship between ethnicity and policy? Under which circumstances does ethnicity become important for the political life? Ethnicity as a political resource: ethnic-political mobilization and its manifestation in contemporary political sphere.
• Nations and Nationalism: the main theoretical approaches
  The main theoretical approaches to the study of nations and nationalism Nation as a cultural community. Nation as imagined community. Nationalism and industrial society. Is nationalism always a form of ethnicity or there is a non-ethnic nationalism? Invention of tradition and its role for nation formation
• The nation-building and nation state
  Notion, content and different types of nation-building. Citizenship and nationalism. Composite polity and civic nationalism of the modern state. Special attention will be paid to the processes of nation-building in the post-soviet space.
• Nation identity formation: theoretical and practical aspects
  Social and political factors in identity processes. Politics of history and its role in the process of national identity formation. The role of external foe in building a national identity. The problem of identity boundaries. Different models, constituent elements, instruments of construction.
• National minorities and the state
  Minorities and majorities. Minorities and the state. Indigenous peoples. Territorial conflict and the protection minorities rights. Diasporas and the state of origin. The impact if migration. Politics of national autonomy and self-determination; devolution and secession.
• Ethnic (ethno-national) policy: the notion, the main content, the different models
  Ethnic (ethno-national) policy: the notion, main directions and aims, different policy models of multiethnic states (an assimilationist model, multiculturalism model etc.). Migration policy as a part of ethno-national policy
• Conclusions
  Discussion of main tendencies in ethnicity and nationalism study.
• Exam test

Assessment Elements

• Activities at class
  For every seminar students are given reading material (research article or fragment of monograph) and questions or assignments for that reading. While seminars these questions and assignments have been discussed.
• Group Project Work
  Group project should be prepared by 4-5 students and consists of two parts. The first part is a research paper (by volume approximately 10 000 symbols) that should be submitted not later than 2 weeks before the course finish. The second part is a group presentation in Power Point that should be given on the last seminar (around 15 min). The topic for the presentation is proposed by the group themselves based on the main topics of the course. The lecture also could give examples of group project topics
• Written Assignments (research paper as a part of Group Project)
• Exam test
  This is a written test in LMS. It consists of different types assignments: - one-choice question - multiple-choice question - alternative question - statements with missing words - connect statements from two columns The test lasts 1 hour 20 min.

Interim Assessment

• Interim assessment (3 module)
  The cumulative grade (GC) is calculated as an average, based on the following equation: GC = 0,4·Ghw + 0,6· Gsa, where Ghw – grade for homework team project Before the last seminar students should prepare a team project – a policy paper on the topic relevant to the course content. The team project should be represented at the last seminar Gsa – grade for students’ activities at class For every seminar students are given reading material (research article or fragment of monograph) and questions or assignments for that reading. While seminars these questions and assignments have been discussed. The final grade (GF) is calculated as follows: GF = 0,6*GC + 0,4*GEX , where GEX – grade for the final examination (written exam test)
