Course Syllabus

Abstract

This course is dedicated to the typology of expression of spatial and temporal concepts in natural language. It is aimed at familiarizing students with principles of linguistic argumentation and a variety of research techniques and methodologies. Special emphasis is placed on practical skills.

  • The goal of the course is to introduce students to the typology of expression of spatial and temporal concepts in natural language, as well to familiarize them with principles of linguistic argumentation and a variety of research techniques and methodologies.

  • Students will understand the basic concepts in the study of space and time in human language
  • Students will be familiar with various research techniques and methodologies employed in modern semantics, typology, contrastive linguistics
  • Students will be able to set up a simple experimental design as well as analyze the data

Course Contents

  • Space
    Introduction. Spatial frames of reference. Anthropocentricity of spatial expressions.
  • Motion
    Motion verbs. Fictive motion. Typology of motion expressions. Satellite-framing and verb-framing languages.
  • Tense
    Tense and time: basic notions. Absolute tense. Relative tense. The typology of tense systems. “Tenseless” languages. Temporal distance.Temporal semantics. Event time ans topic (reference) time. Tense in narrative.
  • Aspect
    Aspect. Perfectivity and imperfectivity. Telicity. Aspectual classes of verbs. Experimental studies of aspect.

    Presentations: Prepare a 30-minute presentation on the selected topic. Try not just to summarize the text, but also to provide criticism/raise points for discussion. Assignments/In-class participation: Submit three discussion points on the topic of the presentation. Be ready to raise (and defend, if need be) your points in class.
  • non-blocking Research project
    A research project is a written study on a topic negotiated between the student and the teacher. Working on the project implies collection and analysis of language data, in addition to the development of skills for critical thinking and written argumentation of ideas. The final text should include clear statement of a research problem; include an analysis of the problem by using concepts and analytical tools within the subject that generalize the point of view of the author. Required format: 8-10 pg. (Times New Roman, 12 pt., double-spaced).
