Full Syllabus

Abstract

The course «Macroeconomics» is designed for providing students with the basic knowledge in the field of macroeconomic theory. They are introduced to essential principles of macroeconomic analysis. The course forms a comprehensive understanding of the functioning of aggregated markets (goods market, financial market and labor market), and of the influence of decisions, made by various economic agents (households, businesses, government, central bank), on the dynamics of key macroeconomic variables in the short and long run.

Learning Objectives

Strengthening the culture of economic thinking
Comprehension of basic principles of macroeconomic analysis, with their application to current macroeconomic processes in the Russian and global economy
Development of individual and corporate economic decision-making skills within the macroeconomic context.
Gaining required knowledge about types and tools of macroeconomic policy.

Expected Learning Outcomes

- Apply the acquired knowledge to the analysis of domestic and foreign macroeconomic statistics.
- Be able to analyze the basic functional relations between different macroeconomic variables in the short- and long run.
- Be able to use the tools of simple modelling to critically evaluate macroeconomic effects of monetary and fiscal policies in different phases of the business cycle.
- Understand and explain possible macroeconomic consequences of decisions, made by economic agents in the closed and open economy.
- Understand contemporary debates about the macroeconomic situation in Russia and in the world.

Course Contents

Section 1. Intro to Macroeconomics and Key Macroeconomic Indicators.
Section 2. Potential Output and Economic Growth.
Section 3. Aggregate Demand and Fiscal Policy.
Section 4. Money, Financial Markets and Monetary Policy.
Section 5. Business Cycles: IS-LM Model.

Assessment Elements

Class participation (quizzes)
Students’ effort during classes is evaluated by the results of regular quizzes. Quiz may consist of multiple choice questions (with one or several correct answers) and/or true-false statements.
Midterm test
Components: 1) Multiple choice questions (with one or several correct answers). 2) Statements (a student has to unambiguously assess every statement on a “true” - “false” scale with the necessary justification). 3) Analytical (numerical) problems that are to be solved with a use of key models, graphs and/or analytical apparatus from the course. A student has to provide the solution process in details.
Final exam

0.25 * Class participation (quizzes) + 0.5 * Final exam + 0.25 * Midterm test
