Course Syllabus

Abstract

The course is designed for Bachelor students following the programme “Public Policy and Analytics”. Its main goal is to familiarize the students with methods of urban analysis and management. In particular, the course accentuates the problem of urban sprawl, municipal and urban engineering, transport system’s optimization, territory marketing. All materials will be provided by teacher (mailed or printed for concrete tasks). Seminar work and the lectures are supplemented by cases from the real life The topics covered include: Urban economics as a part of economics. Urbanization, growth and development of cities; Urban economy as a part of urban management. The real estate market; Municipal and urban engineering. The transport system in a city; Territory marketing; the marketing strategy, marketing research, marketing communication ; Comfort city. Role of government in urban management process.

  • • Able to learn, acquire new knowledge, skills, including in an area different from a professional, • Able to solve problems in professional activities on the basis of the analysis and synthesis , • Able to work with the information: locate, evaluate and use information from different sources, necessary for solving scientific and professional problems (including on the basis of the system approach) , • Able to participate in the preparation of generalizing analytical materials (reports, recommendations, notes, etc.), • Able to organize activities and to participate effectively in a small working group

  • Urban economics as a part of economics. Urbanization, growth and development of cities
    Urban economics. The city: history, criteria, types and functions. The urbanization: measuring, analyzing and integration. Main goals and challenges for modern cities
  • Urban economy as a part of urban management. The real estate market
    Concepts and models: an ideal city, the concentric zone model, sector model, central place model, Zip’s law. Urban agglomeration. Urban economy: application and management.
  • Municipal and urban engineering. The transport system in a city
    Municipal engineering, urban engineering. Main instruments. Professional practice in urban engineering. Relationship to urban design. Mixed-use design. Transport system in a city. Public transport. Pedestrian comfort.
  • Territory marketing; the marketing strategy, marketing research, marketing communication
    Place marketing and place branding. Regional branding and city branding. Marketing strategy. Marketing research. Instruments of marketing research. Marketing communication.
  • Comfort city. Role of government in urban management process.
    Typologies of sites. City, street, house comfort criteria. The sustainable city.
